In order to make EURO 2008 an unforgettable event for players, guests and football fans throughout the world, as well as for the people of the city of Zürich, Host City Zürich is focussing on the sustainable implementation of EURO 2008. To this end, Zürich is consistently guided by sustainable objectives in the three areas of the common Austro-Swiss sustainability concept: the environment, the economy and social culture.
.
Zürich implements the sustainability charter
Avoid waste
In the Fan Zone, returnable glasses with a deposit will be used for beer. Alcohol-free drinks are sold in 500 ml recyclable bottles; glasses will not be provided. The food and drink outlets along the Fan Mile will be encouraged to keep packaging material to a minimum when selling food. The distribution of flyers and freebies will be prohibited throughout the Fan Zone and along the entire Fan Mile.
For EURO 2008, ERZ Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich has formulated a waste concept and implemented communication measures against littering. Before the games, an anti-littering advert, co-supported by ERZ, will be broadcast. Throughout the Party Zone, a large number of waste and recycling bins will make proper waste disposal easy (for PET, aluminium, waste oil and glass). All the collection points that have been set up are labelled with the anti-littering message «Make your Goal – Bring it Back».
Ensure that stadiums are environmentally friendly
In the new Letzigrund Stadium the city has an exemplary stadium that is completely accessible by public transport. During the construction of the stadium, the logistics for returning drink bottles and glasses, a step that has proven to reduce waste, were developed. The stadium roof is also a solar panel. For heating and hot water, two wood-pellet burning furnaces provide CO2-neutral energy.
Implement non-polluting energy-efficient measures
The electricity supply for the Fan Zone and the Fan Mile is provided by 100% pure green electricity (ewz.green power). Diesel aggregates are prohibited in the Fan Zone/Fan Mile. A new generation of energy-saving cooling appliances is being used.
To encourage the use of public transport
Match tickets and tickets for the Public Viewing Zone of the city of Zürich can also be used to travel to the venues by public transport. The use of public transport is also promoted through an additional night-time offer which, thanks to sponsoring by Zürcher Kantonalbank, can be used without the usual surcharge. Both the Letzigrund Stadium and the Bellevue Public Viewing area are very well served by public transport.
Be successful in terms of the economy and jobs
A variety of services will be provided at EURO 2008 by the work integration enterprises of the Social Services Department. An order for the production of 1,000 bags for the volunteers was awarded to the social company, Feinschliff.
Boost tourism
With a service and friendliness campaign in every city and a targeted campaign by Zürich Tourism in different countries, Zürich radiates a positive image and demonstrates its strengths as a tourism destination. The international journalism award, «Living Zürich Media Award» which is awarded jointly with Zürich Tourism, will create keen interest in Zürich as a EURO 2008 host city. The «We Live Zürich» campaign and the LivingZurich.tv programme resulting from the project show the city of Zürich in all its diversity.
Invest beyond EURO 2008
The construction of the Letzigrund Stadium was decided on, planned out and implemented very quickly, making participation in EURO 2008 possible. The stadium will continue to be used in the future for athletics meetings and other cultural events.
Support regional organic products and fair trade products
Caterers and restaurateurs have been recommended to use regional organic products and fair trade products where possible, and individual caterers are putting these recommendations into practice. For example, in the Bellevue Fan Zone only Swiss meat and sausage products will be offered. All the caterers’ wine lists must include Swiss wine.
Reach out to everyone
An attractive cultural programme will reach out to the entire population and to guests, including in particular those who are not interested in football. The platform has been designed especially with local artists in mind and should be an effective vehicle against instances of violence and racism.
Well-positioned ambassadors will implement an awareness campaign and help to prevent riots
Ensure accessibility is the standard There will be parking spaces and more easily accessible spectator spaces for the disabled in the Public Viewing (Fan Zone) and in the stadium.
Emphasise youth and (football) culture Young people will be offered a musical programme with «Local Sounds» on the main stage and the side stage of the Public Viewing area with performances from the local club scene in the Helmhaus and with the EuroRap08 participation of Swiss rappers together with young people.
Zürich supports the Uefa «Euroschools2008». Project. In and out of school, schoolchildren take a good look at their own country, create an intercultural project day and organise their own football tournaments in the jersey of their country. The aim of the project is to promote the intercultural skills of young people and to extend the concept of fair play beyond Euro 08.
Set an example in prevention and youth protection
The people responsible for implementing EURO 2008 in the city of Zürich attach great importance to ensuring that the youth protection provisions are consistently complied with and implement prevention measures in order to help prevent the problematic consumption of alcohol as much as possible. The caterers and restaurateurs have therefore been trained in the prevention of alcoholism, a prevention advert will be displayed and alcohol-free drinks will be offered more cheaply than the cheapest alcoholic drink. Smoking will be prohibited both on the Public Viewing stands in the Fan Zone and in the Letzigrund Stadium.
Zürich supports the EURO 2008 campaign against trafficking in women.
